GCW:Holiday Special 2023

Azreal v. Gringo Loco

This was a good match. Azreal impressed me here and that dive he did to the front row where he landed back first onto the chair was great.

Gringo Loco wins via pinfall
2.75/5

Masha Slamovich v. Manders

This was a really good match. Very hard-hitting and very intense.

Masha Slamovich wins via pinfall
2.75/5

Jordan Oliver defends the JCW Championship against Brayden Toon
This was a great athletic match. Jordan Oliver needs to be signed and Brayden Toon is great.

Jordan Oliver retains via pinfall
3.25/5

Mike Santana v. Alec Price

This was a good match. I got to see what Mike Santana could do as a single which I liked.

Mike Santana wins via pinfall
2.5/5

Richard Holliday and Charles Mason v. Jeffery John and Bobby Flaco

This was more or less a squash match. But I am digging into this new side of Richard Holliday. And Charles Mason telling a kid Santa wasn't real was amazing.

Richard Holliday and Charles Mason win via pinfall
1/5

Joey Janela v. Marcus Mathers

This was a good match. The door spot where Joey propped the door against the wall and put Marcus Mathers through it was great. And at the end, AJ Francis showed up.

Joey Janela wins via pinfall
2.75/5

Jimmy Lloyd v. Speedball Mike Bailey

This was a great match. We got the use of weapons in this, Christmas themed of course. I don't know how Speedball Mike Bailey did the ornament spot with no shoes.

Speedball Mike Bailey wins via pinfall
3.5/5

Blake Christian defends the GCW Championship against Santa Claus

This was fun to watch. Blake Christian is even a shithead on the Holiday Season, damn.

 Blake Christian retains via pinfall

2.5/5

ICW NHB 56

Brandon Kirk v. Reed Bentley

This match was great. Brandon was bleeding from the ear so I hope that's okay. That Regal Plex Reed Bentley gave to Brandon Kirk was amazing too. Hot open.

Reed Bentley wins via pinfall
3.5/5

The Pillars v. Hardcore 69

This was a great match. The amount of punishment Tommy Vendetta took was ridiculous.  This man took a staple gun to the back of the neck from Mad Man Pondo and a fucking sickle to the back from Shadows WX.

Hardcore 69 wins via pinfall
3.75/5

Eric Ryan v. Krule

This was a good match. I liked Eric Ryan working the leg and hitting it with tubes.

Krule wins via pinfall
2.75/5

John Wayne Murdoch v. Tara Zep

What a great match.  I was the most excited for this one and was not let down. John Wayne Murdoch used gussets and all on Tara but she still got a rana in through a glass pane on him.  Honestly, her offense in one way reminded me of Sick Nick Mondo in the way she dove and delivered her stuff. And a cool moment was just as JWM was about to finish off Tara sanSantame to her aid except it waswasn'tnta it was Mick Fuckin Foley! After this Tara Zep may be my new favorite wrestler.

Tara Zep wins via pinfall
4/5

Atticus Cogar v. Danny Demanto

This was a good match. It started but it picked up after the skewer spot. The spot where Danny Demanto threw Atticus Cogar off of the balcony was sick. The whole story of Atticus and Danny using real life was great too.

Danny Demanto wins via pinfall
2.75/5

KillDozer v. Jimmy Lloyd

This was what you would expect from a Matt Tremont/Jimmy Lloyd match. Suck Sami Callihan had travel issues but I got to see Tremont bleed a river so that's cool.

KillDozer wins via pinfall
2.75/5

Hoodfoot defends the American Death Match Championship against Dr. Redacted

This match was great. These two best the fuck out of each other. Both men were covered in glass and blood. We got the use of nunchuck tubes. What else could you ask for? And after Hoodfoot said the American Death Match Championship is on the line in Battle of the Tough Guys.

Hoodfoot retains via pinfall
3/5

ICW:One Night Only 2023

Homicide v. Eric Ryan

This was a good match. Homicide proved he's still got it.

Homicide wins via pinfall
2.5/5

Above The Rest defend the Remarkable Tag Team Championship against The Pillars

This was a decent match. 3 and Tommy Vendetta were great in the ring. Above the Rest was decent but didn't stand out as much as the Pillars.

Above The Rest retain via pinfall
2.5/5

Marcus Mathers defends the ETU Keys to the East Championship against Azrael

A move your car announcement in the middle of a match is amazing. The match was a bit underwhelming for me. Love Marcus Mathers but Azrael didn't do it for me.

Marcus Mathers retains via pinfall
2/5

Dr. Redacted v. Krule

This was a short but brutal match. These two killed each other and made this fun without all the glass and everything.

Krule wins via pinfall
2.75/5

Brian Myers v. Danny Demanto

This was a fun match. They busted out some doors. Brian Myers was good at being a heel and the spot where Mittens hit Myers with a popper bat was cool.

Danny Demanto wins via pinfall
2.75/5

Brandon Kirk v. Jordan Oliver

This was a great match. Brandon Kirk and Jordan Oliver can both go and this was like something that shoulda been in a Best of the Best Tournament.

Brandon Kirk wins via pinfall
3.25/5

Jimmy Lloyd v. Hoodfoot

This was a good match. I knew Jimmy Lloyd could go but I was impressed by Hoodfoot's wrestling abilities. Yeah, they had chairs and doors but it was mostly straight wrestling.  Mo Can Go.

Hoodfoot wins via pinfall
3/5

Best in 2023

One of my favorite parts of reading Hardcore/Punk zines towards the end of the year was checking out their Year in Review sections. It helped me find out about a few bands and what records to check out etc. And I wanted to do one of these for deathmatch wrestling. Some people do a better job of this such as your King's Road Wrestling's of the world but, since this is One Man's Opinion I figured I would give my thoughts on some things. So here are my favorites from 2023.

Death Match Wrestler of the Year:Rina Yamashita

No one else put on as high of caliber Death Matches as her, Her run with the GCW Ultraviolent Championship speaks for itself.

Tag Team of the Year:Los Macizos

These two carried the Death Match Tag Team Division on their scarred up-backs in 2023. They put on banger after banger in GCW and continue to kill it.

Best Promo:Dr. Redacted

This man had a hell of a year. And with his shit-talking before his matches and him killing it on commentary during his matches in ICW. I have to give this award to the Doc.

Promotion of the Year:ICW NHB

As far as putting out quality death match shows ICW NHB took the cake. Banger after Banger after Banger every show.  I had to give it to them.

Match of the year
Rina Yamashita v. Kasey Kirk at GCW:Holy Smokes/ Neil Diamond Cutter v. Matt Tremont 700 Light Tubes

Feud of the Year: GCW v. Freedoms

This had a great build starting with the return to the U.S. Of Jun Kasai. The momentum was kept up at the next Showboat show. And the War Games Match delivered.  I'm glad this feud continues with Nick Gage v. Jun Kasai on New Year's Eve. Plus getting all these Japanese and American Legends in a ring together, who could hate that?

Most improved Wrestler: Dark Sheik

Going into 2023 Dark Sheik wasn't my thing. But leaving 2023 I'm now a fan. She really stepped up her game and had great matches in GCW and is now someone I am excited to see on shows.

Picks to click

So this is your "Rookie" of the Year column but I feel that since I don't know how long any of the people I'm naming have been wrestling I feel that insulting to call them rookies. This is designed to give you an idea of who I think is gonna do big things in 2024.

1)Tara Zep-She stole the tag match at GCW Backyard Wrestling. There's no doubt she's gonna turn heads, mine included in her upcoming appearance at ICW NHB and at JCW and that momentum is going to carry her into the new year as a force to be reckoned with.

2) Emily Jaye- Truth be told I have not watched an actual match of hers but have seen stuff people I know posted of her on Instagram and from what I notice she has charisma and can connect with the fans well so hopefully I can catch a match of hers this year.

3) J-Finn- have not seen a match from him but Nick Gage endorses him so thats all I need.

Show of the Year:GCW Holy Smokes

I gave 2 5/5 matches to this. It had my match of the Year on it. This was the last Carousel Room weekend. And what ended up being Drew Parker's farewell match in the U.S. This had so many great things on this and should be a show that is talked about for years to come.

Best Straight-Up Wrestler:Joey Janela

Joey Janela put on classic matches with everyone he stepped in the ring with. He also did this by wrestling multiple styles of matches and against newcomers, legends you name it. In my eyes, no one on television is on his level and he killed it this year.

RPW:White Out 2023

Randi West v. Remington Rhor

This was a great start. Randi was a killer and bled like crazy. Schwartzy, if you read this you best listen to her or I'm sure life will be hell for you. Remington getting the W off of that door off the ramp was sick. And I'm a sucker for a weedwhacker spot.

Remington Rhor wins via pinfall
2.75/5

Nathan Mowery v. Judge Joe Dred

This was great. Judge Joe Dred is so good and reminds me of a more violent Kevin Steen in the way he interacts with his fans during matches. His suplexing Nathan Mowery onto the ramp was sick and so was the finish with the Judge Driver through the chairs.
Judge Joe Dred wins via pinfall
3/5

MM3 v. Chuck Stein v. Schwartzy

This was an entertaining match. That part where MM3 jammed all those syringes in Chuck Stein was very gross.

MM3 wins via pinfall
2.75/5

Otis Cogar v. Hardway Heeter

This was a cool match until the finish. Otis got his razor spot in then got hit in the arm and had a bad gash so the match had to be stopped. help out Otis if you can
https://linktr.ee/OtisCogar

Hardway Heeter wins via referee stoppage
2/5

Hoodfoot defends the RPW Championship against Zach Thomas

This was a good match until Christian Napier showed up and ruined it.

No Contest
1.75/5

Tommy Vendetta defends the Rust Belt Championship against Casanova Valentine

This was a good match. I love Tommy Vendetta trolling the DME page by wearing a hoodie at the start of this. There were a lot of fun spots like a kid skateboarding into Tommy Vendetta's nuts. The Satan's cock spot and these two stapling a Poster to Tommy Vendetta's head with Judge Joe Dred staring on in disgust.

Tommy Vedetta retains via pinfall
3/5

GCW:Nick Gage Invitational 5

Low Life Louie Ramos v. Mance Warner

This was a great match. These two beat each other with bats with things in them. Mancer stabbed Louie with a fork so much that he was squirting blood. And the finish with Mancer breaking a TV over Louie was great.

Mance Warner advances via pinfall
3/5

Shane Mercer v. Lucky 13

The match was very athletic and good but not what I want out of a death match. The spot where Mercer tossed Lucky through the Barbed Wire Board outside of the ring was cool.

Shane Mercer advances via pinfall
2.5/5

Alex Colon v. Aero Boy

This was a good match and that spot Aero Boy did off of the ladder was insane.

Alex Colon advance via pinfall
2.5/5

AJ Gray v. Masada

This was an enjoyable match but pretty slow-moving. We got a good slam through glass though.

Masada advances via pinfall
2.25/5

Blake Christian v. Jordan Oliver v. Juicy Finau v. Jimmy Lloyd v. Cole Radrick v. Levi Everett

This was a scramble.

Blake Christian wins via pinfall
2.5/5

Alex Colon v. Mance Warner

This was brutal. Colon cutting Mancer with the knife made me cringe and these two bled like crazy from killing each other with tubes. Plus we got the surprise of Mancer winning.

Mance Warner advances via pinfall
3/5

Shane Mercer v. Masada

This match was a bit slow for me as well but the way Masada skewers people is how you're supposed to. They gotta stick in there. And the finish with Masada caving in Shane Mercer's skull was sick as well.
Masada advances via pinfall
2.5/5

Nick Gage administering the glass for the Main Event is one of the best things GCW Ever shot. Worth it for that.

Mance Warner v. Masada in a Taipei Death Match for the NGI Trophy

This was a great match and felt like a real fight. And Mance was squirting blood again. I didn't know a person could bleed so much! The only bad part of this match is it had to come to an abrupt end because Masada got cut badly and they had to go home so he could take care of that.

Mance Warner wins the NGI via pinfall
3.25/5

H2O: KillDozer's Field of Death 2023

Duncan Aleem and Bryan Neil v. Kaos Ctrl

This was a good hardcore match. We had Kendo sticks and trash cans. Plus Kaos Ctrl did some cool shit.

Kaos Ctrl wins via pinfall
2/5

Adonis Valerio v. Lucky 13 in a DLC Match

For a DLC Match, there wasn't too much of that.

Adonis Valerio wins via pinfall
1.5/5

Braxx v. Low Life Louie in a Home Run Derby Death Match

This was pretty good. Both men bled like crazy and Louie did more spots I can't mention here.

Braxx wins via pinfall
2/5

Brandon Kirk v. GG Everson is a Super Market Sweep Death Match

This was a good match. Brandon took some punishment by being dropped off at Legos barefoot. And the finish with the lariat off of the shopping cart was vicious.

GG Everson wins via pinfall
2.5/5

Jess Moss defends the Hybrid Championship against Frank Bonetti in a Barbed Wire Board Match

This was a crazy match and Jess stole the show here.  She bled like crazy and showed what charisma she had.

Jess Moss retains via pinfall
2.75/5

President Hawkins v. Lady Blakely in a Taipei Death Match

This felt like kind of a comedy match and Taipei Death Matches aren't for me so I want to go into this.

Lady Blakely wins via pinfall
1/5

Anthraxx v. Leroy Robinson in a Carpet Strip and Thumb Tack Death Match

This was okay. Anthraxx is one of my favorites in H2O so him destroying Leroy Robinson was awesome.

Anthraxx wins via pinfall
2/5

Deklan Grant v. Alex Stretch

This was a great match. These two went hard, bled, and broke the glass. What more could you ask for?

Alex Stretch wins via pinfall
2.75/5

KillDozer v. Mouse

This match was insane. Mouse took a hell of a beating and that bump he took onto the Exploding Barbed Wire Board was insane. I think Mouse was made here.

KillDozer wins via pinfall
3/5

This was what you would expect from these two. Great wrestling.

Jordan Oliver wins via pinfall

Matt Cardona, Steph DeLander, and Jimmy Lloyd win via pinfall
2.5/5

Ninja Mack v. Cole Radrick v. Bodhi Young Prodigy v. Mr. Danger v. Manders v. Dark Sheik v. Oni El Bendito

Ninja Mack wins via pinfall
3.5/5

George South v. Santana Jackson

This match wasn't my thing but it served its purpose.

Santana Jackson wins via pinfall
2/5

Violence is Forever defended the GCW Tag Team Championship against Masha Slamovich and Rina Yamashita

This was a very good and hard-hitting match

Violence is Forever retained via pinfall
2.75/5

Big Fn Joe v. Sawyer Wreck

This was a great match. Joe shoving that can be hilarious. These two went as hard as they could without this being a Death Match and we did get a gusset plate spot.

Big Fn Joe wins via pinfall
3/5

SGC v. South Pacific Savages

This match was great. There was a lot of brawling and a lot of bleeding. Jacob Fatu is so good. And how the fuck did Juicy Finau do that moonsault? Also, we got a Mance Warner heel turn after the match.
South Pacific Savages via pinfall
2.75/5

Blake Christian defends the GCW Championship against Starboy Charlie

This was a pretty good match. Starboy Charlie looks to have put on muscle. And we got an athletic match.

Blake Christian retains via pinfall
2.75/5

Johnny Game Changer and Taya Valkyrie v. Maki Death Kill

This was a good match. This was a nice brawl which I didn't expect from Johnny and Taya and the finish was a surprise to me but a welcomed one with Taya rolling up Maki Itoh.

Johnny Game Changer and Taya Valkyrie win via pinfall
2.75/5

Andrade El Idolo v. Joey Janela

This was so good. Andrade proved he can hang in a GCW ring against Joey Janela and this was a great high-caliber wrestling match I can't wait to see what else Andrade does in GCW.

Andrade El Idolo wins via submission
3.25/5

CZW:Cage of Death VIII

Icarus, Gran Akuma, Max Boyer and Niles Young v. Beef Wellington, Ricochet, Chuck Taylor and Player Uno

This match was a little weird. They traded Max Boyer and Player Uno in the middle of the match. The action was good and a lot of these guys are on my TV now so that's something.

Beef Wellington, Ricochet, Chuck Taylor, and Max Boyer win via pinfall
2.25/5

New Jersey All-Stars v. Team Andrew

This was good. You can see traces of what Drew Gulak would become and Lucky 13 did some cool shit at this time.

Team Andrew won via submission

This was a hoss fight and Maven Bentley got smacked around.

Mana wins via pinfall
2.5/5

Cheech v. Cloudy in a Falls Count Anywhere Match

This was a good match. Sabian did some cool shit and Robbie Mireno is very entertaining.

Black Out wins the CZW Tag Team Championship via pinfall
2.75/5

Sexxy Eddy v. Hallowicked

This match was okay. Sexxy Eddy was great but Hallowicked didn't do it for me. Maybe it's because I'm not the biggest Chikara fan but just wasn't into it.

Hallowicked wins via pinfall
2.25/5

Ruckus v. Human Tornado

This was a good match. Both men did some athletic things and in Ruckus's case it still amazes me how he could do all the flips and stuff for being his size

Ruckus wins via pinfall
2.5/5

Pandora's Box v. Danny Havoc, Luke Hawx, and LuFisto

This was a pretty good match. All the Death Match workers in this (Havoc, LuFisto, Messiah) showed they could all go. B-Boy went ham in this one as well, B-Boy is underrated.

Pandora's Box wins via pinfall
2.75/5

Necro Butcher defends the CZW Ultraviolent Championship against Drake Younger

This was a great match. Both guys beat the fuck out of each other. That suplex Drake gave Necro on that ladder was ridiculous as well. I get why both men are legends.

Drake Younger wins the CZW Ultraviolent Championship via pinfall
3.25/5

Eddie Kingston defends the CZW Championship against Justice Pain and Chris Hero in a 3 way Elimination Match

This was a really good hard-hitting match. They had the surprise of Eddie Kingston getting eliminated first. Hero and Justice Pain proceeded to beat the shit out of each other and I loved it.

Justice Pain wins the CZW Championship via pinfall
3/5

Nick Gage v. Lobo v. Zandig v. LuFisto in Cage of Death

The stipulation of this match is the loser will retire forever. This match was so good. I'm surprised Lobo didn't die here. He went through the staging twice. Once the stage just gave way and the other Zandig drove Lobo off of the cave through the staging. The commentary described this best. It looked like a car wreck on I-95. And the fans said it best "That was awesome".

Nick Gage wins via pinfall and per stipulation Zandig must retire
5/5

GCW:What Is Your Choice? 2023

SGBussy won via pinfall
2.75/5

Masha Slamovich v. Tracy Williams

Masha Slamovich wins via pinfall
3/5

Violence is Forever defends the GCW Tag Team Championship against The Mane Event

This was a great match. The Mane Event showed off their athleticism. Midas Black hit insane air on the Frog Splash that he did. And Violence is Forever is continuing to grow on me. These guys are legit.

Violence is Forever retained via pinfall
3/5

Unagi Sayaka v. Billie Starkz

This was a good match. Billie keeps upping her game and I've seen very little of Sayaka but she looked good here.

Billie Starkz wins via pinfall
2.75/5

Blake Christian defends the GCW Championship against Little Guido

Entertainment-wise this was fun to watch. Match qualitywise this wasn't great. Wouldnt mind seeing more of Little Guido in GCW.

This was great. It was two great athletes going out and doing what they do.

Jordan Oliver wins via pinfall

This was a good match.  Rina is proving that death match wrestlers can go and Tony Deppen is an amazing talent.

Rina Yamashita wins via pinfall

Charles Mason and Parrow v. Richar Holliday and Alexander Hammerstone

2/5

Speedball Mike Bailey v. Maki Itoh

This was a fun match. Speedball was great, Maki was great and they made Perch cry.

Maki Itoh wins via pinfall
2.25/5

This was decent. Jordan Oliver is great. Azrael was good but didn't stand out to me.

Cole Radrick wins via pinfall
2.5/5

Masha Slamovich and Rina Yamashita v. Miracle Generation

This was a great match. Masha and Rina are always great and they busted out some doors and chairs. Miracle Generation is impressing me lately and I hope they keep it up.

3.5/5

Effy v. Santana Jackson

This was a good match. I said before I was tired of the Santana Jackson gimmick but he was great here and that gimmick worked well with Effy.

The Mane Event v. Waves and Curls

This was okay. I like Mane Event but Waves and Curls still hasn't clicked with me.

The Mane Event wins via pinfall
2/5

Richard Holliday v. Parrow

This was a good brawl and this has a good story with Richard Holliday being fucked with by Charles Mason since he got to GCW. Now Richard Holliday has backup in Alex Hammerstone. It sucks there was a non finish but this was still fun.

No Contest
2.5/5

Unagi Sayaka v. LuFisto

This match was decent. Unagi was good and the most entertaining part of this match was LuFisto yelling at a fan.

Griffin McCoy v. Nolo Kitano v. Raheem Royal v. R1 v. Gabriel Skye

This was a scramble with different people.

Griffin McCoy wins via pinfall
2/5

This was a great match. I was not expecting a Death Match in Connecticut but here we are. Tubes, staple guns, and barbed wire doors oh my! And of course, Steph DeLander had to further the feud with Jimmy Lloyd and ruin things.

Sawyer Wreck wins via pinfall
3.75/5

Blake Christian defends the GCW Championship against Alec Price

Instead of doing a review, I'll ask a question. Why the fuck isn't Alec Price signed? I mean that kick he gave Blake Christian off the middle rope. My god.

Blake Christian retains via pinfall
3.5/5

H2O:The Last November 2023

Braxx v. Mouse

This was a so-so match. Mouse is great and I would like to see him have a longer match. More Mouse, please?

Mouse wins via pinfall
1/5

Leroy Robinson v. Jimmy Chondo Lyon

This was a decent match. Jimmy Chondo Lyon is doing his heel turn well, and his beating down Leroy Robinson and cutting promos mid-match was great.

Jimmy Chondo Lyon wins via pinfall
2/5

Lady Blakely v. Anthraxx in an I Quit Match

This was a good match. Anthraxx has come into his own as a heel. And after Anthraxx stomped Lady Blakely's head in a chair and had her carried out in an ambulance this feud isn't over.

Anthraxx wins
2/5

President's Cabinet v. Team Chaos Ctrl in an Elimination Match

This was your typical Survivor Series-style match. Duncan Aleem turned heel and joined the Hawkins faction.

President's Cabinet wins via pinfall
1.5/5

This was very good. It was a violent match. That board with tacks on it was sick. And I'm not allowed to talk about the finish or I'll get reported but it was brutal.

Jess Moss retains via submission
2.75/5

JB Anderson v. Matt Tremont

This was a squash and Tremont got to advance his new character more. And after Mouse challenged Matt Tremont to a dance bring the weapons match at the next show.

This was a good match. It was violent and both men bled a lot but this was kinda slow paced for my liking.
Bam Sullivan retains via pinfall
2.5/5

GCW: Dream On 2025

Lucky 13 came out and insulted the crowd, then Hacksaw Jim Duggan came out and insulted Lucky 13. Ray Jaz came out and attacked Lucky 13. ...
